Prelim Task

In our class we was all separated into groups of people that we have never worked with before. We then was given a genre to come up with a film about that would interest the public and then this would be practise for our real task. Throughout our time working on out prelim task, we had to create storyboards, write a script, prepare locations, think about weather, practise different camera angels and different shots, practise editing and I even got a chance to practise my acting and also use our choice of sound efficiently. The genre we was given was Adventure, and we had to try and think of something we felt would work well and would fit around the little time scale we had. We come up with an imaginative idea which we thought would appeal to a lot of different target audiences. The things that were successful were that we had a ride range of camera angles included in our task and the location set the clear vibe and mood that we wanted it to. Things we could of improved was the acting, as none of us in out group were experienced or confident with acting but we all got involved as much as we could. The feedback we were given was that they was not clear on the genre, and we thought that this was a good point so next time we would make the genre clear in better ways.

Whilst preparing and taking part in my groups prelim task, 'What's in the Woods?' there was a variety of things I notices you had to be aware of and prepare before hand. Before we started the Prelim Task I did not realise that some things would be as difficult as they were.
These include:

  • Being responsible for props/costumes. For example each character had to make sure they wore the same outfit each day otherwise it will cause distraction to the audience and think it was a different day.
  • Also, we had to take into consideration the weather, as if it was raining one day and then sunny the next day it would not look right in our film and the viewers will easily notice that they were filmed on different days.
  • Luckily in our Prelim task we did not need to ask anyone to be an extra as we had enough protagonists, but other groups noticed that some extras can be unreliable as they may not be available on the day needed.
  • Also continuity errors were a big thing we had to consider and if they were not the same then the movie would not be professional.
  • Diplomacy and compromise were key team skills that were needed during this task.
  • We also had to consider, that if one of our protagonists were absent, we had to ensure that we had a backup plan for this. Maybe this would consist of using another person to take on the role, or rescheduling to a different date that this protagonist will be back in.
  • We were also very limited on equipment, and as this was our first trial we took this as a big learning curve. We had to make sure we knew how to work a camera and get the editing as good as we could, but if we was not overly happy then we didn't need to worry as this was only a preparation towards our final task.
After understanding that there was a lot of things we should of considered before hand, I can then take these into consideration for my real task and inform the other members in my group the things that could go wrong and the things we need to prevent from happening, and this was all learnt in my Prelim Task.
