Art of the title

What is the definition of a Title Sequence?
A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilising conceptual visuals and sound.

What is the function of a Title Sequence?
The function of a title sequence is to be used in cinematic films or television programs to present the title of their film or programme, key production and cast members, using interesting and relevant typography and sounds in the background to give the idea of the genre of the programme/film and show the people involved in creating it. For example, in a Ron com movie, the typography used could be girly and pink, and the non diegetic sound (background music) could be a happy song.

Name three films featured in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence
  • Forest Gump
  • Juno
  • The Pink Panther
Select 2 film Title Sequence shown in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence and discuss how the Title Sequence uses Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements and what kind of mood/feeling is created as a result? And What does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film?
Juno: The typography elements in this opening title sequence is very childish, and is plain in block letters. They are all in CAPITAL LETTERS and use a variety of colours for each different piece of text they put onto the screen. It gives the audience the feeling of the film and shows you that it is going to be about children and is aimed at a young audience. The typography does not bore you, it intrigues you... It makes you look at the writing and acknowledge who was involved in the making of it. The titles are placed in a creative place in the scenes. For example, when Juno is walking past the side of the shop, as she is walking it reveals a name, this makes you look at what is written but at the same time you can see that she is walking and you still acknowledge the characters. When each piece of text appears, it uses a fun effect which draws your attention to the writing and shows you the type of film that it is going to be. The visual imagery used are also very child like, as most of the shots are edited into cartoon. The fact that the only character in the shots show that Juno is going to be the main character throughout the film and the main focus is going to be on her, also the fact that she is a teenage girl shows that the target audience is going to be teenagers. The sound elements shown in the opening sequence is just a happy song in the background, this is a non diegetic sound. The fact that the song is happy and jolly shows us a clear view that the genre is going to be a Ron Com, and therefore this rules out other genres like Thriller and Horror. The mood and feeling of this movie is happy, as there is a happy song replaying through your mind. It is also a very catchy feeling which makes you sing along. Also, every shot fits with every beat of the song. The sequence shows that the theme and content of the film is going to be based on the girl and probably problems that go on in her life.

The Pink Panther: The Typography elements in this opening is very bright colours, also they are very girly, like pink backgrounds. This similarly links to the actual title as it is called "The pink panther". The font used is very childlike, similar to Juno, which makes us think that the target audience for this film is children. The colours and the background severely juxtapose each other, as they are mostly the complete opposites. This makes the writing stand out more so it is easier to acknowledge them. The actual font alone is quite masculine as it uses manly colours like blue and green. This then balances out that it is aimed at men and women film. The visual elements makes you also think that this is a child like movie, and the panther itself is in cartoon which makes you think that the movie will be in cartoon, therefore it could be a target audience of children. The sound elements. Because of the non diegetic sound in the background, it gives the mysterious vibe that is aimed for. Also this background music gives off a comedic feel as the music is quite catchy and jokey.
